ARG: Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How does ARG work? A: Using the principle of controlled moment gyro, this gyrostabilizer resists rolling motions in an effort to keep a boat upright. Utilizing a heavy, spinning flywheel spinning around a vertical axis, the system “pushes back” when waves attempt to cause roll. These rolling motions are converted into more comfortable, gentle, vertical motions.
Q: Does ARG work when the boat is docked? A: Unlike conventional fin stabilizers which require the flow of water to be effective, ARG works extremely well at rest. ARG is the elusive answer to creating a more comfortable experience at the dock or on the hook.
Q: Does ARG work when the boat is at speed? A: ARG works when you need it most, from rest to 12 knots. This means that whether at anchor, navigating the ICW, or passing another vessel, your experience on the water will be much more roll-free.
Q: How does ARG compare to conventional stabilizer fins? Is it as effective? A: Since they operate on completely different principles, it’s difficult to directly compare ARG to conventional fin stabilizers. For starters, however, unlike stabilizers, ARG works very well at rest. At slower speeds, ARG effectiveness is very comparable to fin stabilizers while eliminating typical performance and contact issues related to protrusion of the stabilizer from the hull.
Q: Can ARG be retrofitted to my boat? A: ARG can be retrofitted to most boats, provided the stringers are sound, space can be found to mount the box, and sufficient AC power is available.
Q: What size boat will most benefit from ARG? A: ARG can be applied to almost any size vessel. Smaller boats will employ one ARG unit. Multiple ARG units work in tandem to effectively reduce roll on larger yachts.
Q: How much does ARG cost? A: The ARG system is comparable in price to conventional fin stabilizers. The size and number of ARG units depends on several factors, including length, beam, displacement, and metacentric height.
Q: Is ARG safe? Are there conditions in which is it not safe to run the ARG? A: ARG is an enclosed system with no exposed moving parts to cause harm to either the vessel or its operators. It does not, however, completely eliminate roll motions, especially in dangerous conditions.
