All About ARG

Of course, the singular Bertram luxury is the incomparable ride, now made even more amazing by our available Anti-Rolling Gyro (ARG). Bertram is the first and only sport fishing boat to offer the ARG technology, developed by Mitsubishi for the Ferretti group.

The Mitsubishi Anti-Rolling Gyro (ARG) is the ultimate solution for reducing the effects of water’s rolling motion by up to 50%. This advanced Mitsubishi technology has been granted as a world exclusive to Ferretti until 2011. Similar in function to fin stabilizers but with several key advantages, ARG reacts to waves to resist roll and keep boaters feeling comfortable on the water. Whether floating at the dock, coasting down the waterway, or cruising at sea, this innovative gyroscopic stabilizer smoothes out the waves to make your time on the water a thoroughly enjoyable experience.

The ARG system was developed by Mitsubishi over a twelve-year period utilizing advanced technology developed for the space program. Using the principle of a gyroscope, much like a bicycle at speed, the ARG actively resists forces caused by wave action, resulting in a much more comfortable and satisfying boating experience.

The ARG operates on the principle of “Control Moment Gyro.” A heavy flywheel, spinning at high speeds, is supported by a gimbal mechanism which rotates to generate an effective suppression force on the rolling motion of a boat.

The ARG comes as a self-contained unit, requiring only secure mounting to the boat structure and a source of electricity. A simple control panel is included to turn the system on and off and monitor its function. Ease of use and low maintenance are among the system’s numerous advantages.

  • Unlike fin stabilizers, ARG is completely contained inside the vessel. The system doesn’t introduce drag, so hull efficiency, and therefore speed and fuel economy, is unaffected. In addition, vulnerability to external contact is eliminated.
  • Because the system does not depend upon the flow of water, ARG effectively reduces rolling motions when a boat is at rest, often when it is needed most. The ARG system works equally well at slow cruising speeds, when the natural dynamics of the hull are least resistant to roll.
  • ARG requires only one source of electricity and is contained in a single box. The system can be located anywhere, forward, aft, up, or down, as long as adequate structure and power are available. Installation, including retrofits, couldn’t be simpler.
  • ARG does not require periodic maintenance or adjustment and has no visible moving parts. It’s completely self-contained, so ownership is hassle-free.
  • ARG cost of operation is minimal.
  • ARG operation requires no input from the captain once it’s powered up. A simple on-off switch activates the system.
